A picture of St Mary's church
St Mary's Church

The Anglican parish church is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalen.

Major parts of the church date from the Norman period and the Anglican parish register dates from 1562.

There is a Medieval reference to Rothwell Church (ecclesiam de Rowelle) in the York Charters volume 27; Geoffrey, Archbishop of York, confirms the presentation (by Nostell Priory) of Henry of Nottingham (cleric).

G[aufridus] Dei gratia Ebor[acensis] archiepiscopus et Anglie primas omnibus has literas visuris vel audituris eternam in Domino salutem Noverit universitas vestra nos Henr[icum] clericum de Notingham ad presentationem prioris et convenes sancti Osuualdi de Nostel recepisse ad ecclesiam de Rowelle vacantem et eum ad petitionem eorundem instituisse Valete

There are nine rich Norman arches in the nave; the tower was originally Saxon.

The church was repaired and enlarged in 1849 and currently seats 140.
